It looks like 2010 was the year of the app. The American Dialect Society elected the word “app” as the 2010 Word of Year recently because it “best sums up the country’s preoccupation last year.”
According to the Society, 2010 was the year in which the word reached omnipresence in our culture, thanks in large part to the booming popularity of smartphones.
The runner-up to Word of the Year: “Nom,” as popularized by the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street and widely used in Internet memes.
