Vegetarians don’t have a monopoly on the idea of being socially conscious eaters. On the Heritage Foods website, visitors learn that “if we want to save [rare varieties of livestock], we must eat them!” Although only eight years old, Heritage Foods USA has increased the number of a rare breed of turkey and is supporting various organizations with similar goals, such as the Iroquois White Corn project in New York. The site seeks to “promote genetic diversity, small family farms, and a fully traceable food supply” by endorsing sustainable land use and small-scale food production. Visitors to the site can order all types of meat, including bison, goat, and traditionally Native American foods like a fruit known as pawpaw. There are also links to the Heritage Radio Network and a map to find approved food producers. This site proves that carnivores can be true animal lovers.
